When a financial services company recently began using Cursor, an artificial intelligence technology that writes computer code, the difference that it made was immediate.
The company went from producing 25,000 lines of code a month to 250,000 lines. That created a backlog of one million lines of code that needed to be reviewed, said Joni Klippert, a co-founder and the chief executive of StackHawk, a security start-up that was working with the financial services firm.
The sheer amount of code being delivered, and the increase in vulnerabilities, is something they can’t keep up with, she said. And as software development moved faster, that forced sales, marketing, customer support and other departments to pick up the pace, Ms. Klippert added, creatinga lot of stress.Since A.I. coding tools from Anthropic, OpenAI, Cursor and other companies took off last year, one result has now become apparent: code overload.
We formed Project Glasswing because of capabilities we’ve observed in a new frontier model trained by Anthropic that we believe could reshape cybersecurity. Claude Mythos Preview is a general-purpose, unreleased frontier model that reveals a stark fact: AI models have reached a level of coding capability where they can surpass all but the most skilled humans at finding and exploiting software vulnerabilities.
Mythos Preview has already found thousands of high-severity vulnerabilities, including some in every major operating system and web browser. Given the rate of AI progress, it will not be long before such capabilities proliferate, potentially beyond actors who are committed to deploying them safely. The fallout—for economies, public safety, and national security—could be severe. Project Glasswing is an urgent attempt to put these capabilities to work for defensive purposes.
OpenAI does not like to be left out. The week after Anthropic announced Claude Mythos Preview—an AI model that has put governments around the world on edge because of its potential ability to hack into banks, energy grids, and military systems—OpenAI shared a program that is uncannily similar. And just like Anthropic did with its model, OpenAI has, for cybersecurity purposes, restricted access to this new bot, called GPT-5.4-Cyber, to a small group of trusted users.
This sequence has become something of a pattern: First Anthropic will make an announcement, and then OpenAI will follow suit.
By then, Sutskever, who had previously dedicated most of his time to advancing AI capabilities, had started to focus half of his time on AI safety. He appeared to people around him as both boomer and doomer: more excited and afraid than ever before of what was to come. That day, during the meeting with the new researchers, he laid out a plan.
Once we all get into the bunker—he began, according to a researcher who was present.
I’m sorry,the researcher interrupted,the bunker?
We’re definitely going to build a bunker before we release AGI,Sutskever replied. Such a powerful technology would surely become an object of intense desire for governments globally. The core scientists working on the technology would need to be protected.Of course,he added,it’s going to be optional whether you want to get into the bunker. Two other sources I spoke with confirmed that Sutskever commonly mentioned such a bunker.
There is a group of people—Ilya being one of them—who believe that building AGI will bring about a rapture, the researcher told me.Literally, a rapture.(Sutskever declined to comment on this story.)
